Nero Fiddled, Trump Golfs

Three weeks ago, I came up with this title. Last week, Bernie Sanders used a similar phrase at the Democratic convention. It reflects, sadly, the state of political leadership in the U.S. for many observers.

In 1980, then candidate Ronald Reagan asked voters if they were better off than they had been in 1976. The answer was a resounding “no”, and the result was his overwhelming victory at the polls.

Voters will soon be asked if they are better off than they were in 2016, and we anxiously await their verdict.

To date, Republican results have been wanting indeed.

Since the Reagan years, Republicans have been the anti-government party – perennially in opposition to government even when they are in power.

We have moved beyond the eighties. Small goverment is no longer the answer.

Giving the rich huge tax breaks in the hope that they will trickle down to the ordinary voter has exacerbated income inequality that, for the middle and working class, is less and less tenable or aceptable.

The additional problems of police brutality, systemic racism, a failing medical coverage infrastructure, and enormous social and political polarization demand urgent action.

The Trump administration and Republicans in general have proven unwilling to provide positive leadership and work to address these challenges.

Indeed, there are currently over 300 bills passed by the House of Representatives sitting on Republican Senate Majority Leaders Mitch McConnel’s desk, and he refuses to table any for a vote in the Senate.

Republican leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic has been malicious. The President, enabled by the Republicans in office, at first ignored the pandemic, then offered ridiculous and dangerous medical advice and then sought to reopen the economy with no thought as to how to prevent further spikes. Had they pushed the administration and listened to the experts to take strong and concerted steps to address the pandemic early on, many of the 150,000 deaths to date could have been avoided. Instead, Republicans preferred to follow a President who, as always, has no clue and makes it all up as he goes along.

Republicans have insisted on sending children to unsafe schools while delaying supporting the tens of millions of Americans who have been left with no income, by tying aid to increases in defense and military spending, unlike other Western countries that simply and immediately provided the subsidies to their citizens.

Republican promises of 2016 – a better health care system than “Obamacare”, increasing manufacturing jobs in the United States, “draining the swamp”, and a building a border wall, remain unmet, if not exacerbated.

If we ask what Republicans have accomplished since they won the White House and majorities in the Senate, the only answer I can come up with are an incompetent administration filled with cronies who know little about their portfolios, an ineffective and vindictive Senate majority, and a President who lies and golfs constantly.

Mendacity and obfuscation have been the hallmark of this President, these Republican leaders and many of their followers.

Closing voting stations and cancelling voter registrations in Republican-governed states underscores Republican fears of a fair and free election, especially in African American constituencies.

Senate Republicans and Trump himself remain more obsessed with former President Obama and former candidate Hillary Clinton than with current challenges.

Republicans appear out of touch with mainstream America.

On november 3rd, we’ll see how mainstream america reacts.
