La Jornada Maya

Miércoles 6 de julio, 2016

A great newspaper is one that brings a multiplicity of views so that readers can form their own opinions about events and developments at home and abroad. It stops short of espousing a single ideology, focusing instead on fomenting discussion and dialogue among its readers. It strives to present reality and its perceptions, melding local, national, and international news so that readers can plan their days and lives accordingly.

When I arrived in Merida in January of this year, I found such a newspaper. The brainchild of Fabrizio Leon Diez, La Jornada Maya reflects his vision of a newspaper that reaches multiple audiences in Yucatan State, on the peninsula, in Mexico, and around the world. It melds local news in Spanish and Mayan, underscoring the importance of the Yucatan's native peoples by providing them with news and views in their own language.

By creating editions for Campeche and Quintana Roo, he has created a truly peninsular medium that meets the needs of this society separated by political boundaries but united through a common past and shared geography and destiny.

When Fabrizio invited me to write for La Jornada Maya, he insisted I write whatever I felt was required on whatever topic I thought pertinent to the needs and interests of readers. This freedom has allowed me to explore various themes thus far, with the freedom any journalist needs to do the job properly.

By asking me to write in English, Fabrizio sought to create a tri-lingual newspaper (English, Spanish, and Mayan) that reaches multiple audiences at home and abroad. Besides the Mayan and Spanish speaking readership, the Yucatan Peninsula is home to millions of visitors from around the world who visit annually to escape winter and enjoy the rich cultural offerings the peninsula has, together with the peace and safety of Merida, the Yucatan´s largest city and commercial and cultural center.

Reaching these visitors is a major objective of La Jornada Maya, with the goal of ensuring that tourists have a way to stay in touch with the Yucatan long after they have returned home. This is essential to create an aura of interest in the region and build the base of returning tourists, so vital for the economy and livelihood of the region.

The newspaper business is undergoing a massive transformation, as new technologies create new media for the dissemination of news and opinion. Setting out a new course in this sea of change is a challenge all media are facing. La Jornada Maya enjoys an excellent website that brings the news of the Yucatan to the world. It uses social media effectively, with Twitter and Facebook providing a complement to its website, bringing news and developments immediately to followers. The transformation will continue, as La Jornada Maya changes its business and production models to meet new realities.

I am honored to be writing my articles in English for Yucatecos who speak the language and want to use these articles to practice the language of global business and politics, as well as connect on topics not normally covered by local newspapers. I hope to be joined soon by others writing in English and other languages to reflect the global village in which we live and which the Yucatan is becoming through growing tourism and migration.

Happy Birthday La Jornada Maya, and may the years to come witness your growth not only in size, but also in relevance to your growing readership.
