The assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov on December 19 marks the first time in a long while that a senior diplomat has been assassinated while doing his job. He was shot while visiting a photo exhibit in the diplomatic quarter of Ankara.

The assassin reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) after the shooting and was reportedly killed by police. According to Sky News, the attacker shouted: "We made an oath to die in martyrdom...it is revenge for Syria and Aleppo." He is believed to have added: "Until they are safe, you will not taste safety. "Get back, only death will take me from here."

It is understood the man was speaking in Arabic.

According to local reports, the attacker was a Turkish policeman who had been assigned to the security detail overlooking the event which Mr. Karlov had been attending. The assassination is suspected to be in reprisal for Russia’s current bombing of Aleppo that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

Relations between Russia and Turkey have improved over the past year as both put behind them the fallout of Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian fighter in 2015. Both Presidents have been speaking over the phone lately as they coordinate their campaign to evacuate the besieged city of Aleppo.

Russia had imposed strict sanctions on Turkey after the downing of their plane and death of the pilot, but in recent months the relationship has taken a more positive turn. Turkish President Erdogan wrote a conciliatory letter to the Russian government in June of this year, and relations had begun to thaw. It remains to be seen how this assassination will affect the relationship in this powder-keg.

There have been many demonstrations in Turkey against the Russian involvement in Syria, especially since Turkey opposes the current Syrian leader and support the opposition. The Russian and Syrian bombing of Aleppo has been especially brutal, with tens of thousands of civilians maimed or killed.

However, during the recent coup attempt in Turkey, President Putin was one of the first foreign leaders to express his full support for Turkish President Erdogan.

This attack comes a week after a pair of bombings at a football match in Istanbul that claimed 44 lives. Kurdish militants claimed credit for this attack, one of many across Turkey in recent months.

Diplomats have always been seen as targets for terrorists protesting their cause. Embassies around the world have enhanced security over the past few decades as the threat becomes more acute. However, it is impossible to isolate diplomats when they leave their compound to do their public diplomacy, an activity that remains an intricate component of any diplomat’s job description.

The region is a powder-keg, with a number of foreign powers taking sides against each other in a proxy war whose victims are innocent civilians. The war has lasted for five years, and shows no sign of ending. Repeated attempts to enforce a cease-fire have come and gone, and the violence continues.

While the United Nations has claimed that there is no military solution to the conflict, Syrian President Assad continues to pursue the military option and has not taken peace talks seriously, since a diplomatic solution would likely imply his departure from power.

The United Nations Security Council has been deadlocked for five years, to the dismay of many. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has repeatedly criticized the inaction by this body – remarks that have fallen on deaf ears to date. People around the world are united in their dismay for the ongoing violence, yet their concerns go unheard.

The murder of a key diplomat underscores the volatility of the region, and the possibility of increased tension over the coming months.

Foreign governments have expressed their dismay at this assassination, and it remains to be seen what security officials in Ankara will discover with respect to the nature of this deadly attack. If it was a one-off attack, they will carefully have to vet their police officers to ensure that they are professionals and do their jobs. If there has been a conspiracy, then authorities will have to investigate it fully and bring the ringleaders to justice.

In the meanwhile, a family has lost its husband, father, son, and brother to political violence, and Russia has lost a well-respected diplomat.

And the world has lost a bit more of whatever innocence remains.

El homicidio del embajador ruso en Turquía, Andrey Karlov, ocurrido ayer, es el primero en el que un diplomático del primer nivel es asesinado, desde hace mucho tiempo, mientras realiza su trabajo. Fue abatido durante una visita a una exhibición de fotografía en el cuartel diplomático de Ankara.

Según se reportó, el asesino gritó: “Allahu Akbar” (Dios es grande), tras disparar; los primeros informes indicaron que la policía lo abatió. De acuerdo con Sky News, el atacante gritó en árabe: “hicimos un juramento de morir en martirio, es una venganza por Sirya y Aleppo”. Se cree que añadió “hasta que ellos no estén a salvo, ustedes no estarán seguros; aléjense, sólo la muerte me llevará”.

Rusia impuso sanciones a Turquía, tras el derribo del avión y la muerte del piloto, pero recientemente las relaciones tomaron un giro más positivo. Las personas alrededor del mundo se unen ante la violencia continúa y sus preocupaciones siguen sin ser escuchadas.

El asesinato de un diplomático clave muestra la volatilidad de la región y la posibilidad de una mayor tensión en los próximos meses.

Gobiernos externos han expresado su pesar ante el asesinato y queda por verse lo que los oficiales de seguridad en Ankara descubrirán en relación a la verdad sobre el ataque. Si fue un lobo solitario, tendrán que analizar cuidadosamente su cuerpo policial, para asegurar que tienen profesionales que realicen su trabajo. Si fue una conspiración, las autoridades tendrán que investigar plenamente y traer a los orquestadores a la justicia.

Mientras tanto, una familia perdió a su esposo, a un padre, a un hijo y a un hermano, frente a la violencia política. Rusia, perdió a un respetado diplomático. Y el mundo un poco más de lo que le queda de inocencia.
