The World Economic Forum

Founded in 1971 by Professor Klaus Schwab, the World Economic Forum (WEF) meets in Davos Switzerland every January. It brings together political leaders from across the globe, private sector movers and shakers, members of civil society, and the media. The objective is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and the development of evolving visions with which to address the challenges facing us.

I had the privilege of attending the WEF in 2012 and 2013 as Deputy Spokesperson for U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. It was an eye opener!

The conferences were highly informative and brought the world’s most intelligent and visionary chief executives, heads of government and ministers, and artists of the stature of U2’s Bono, a major figure in motivating support for African development over the years. Important media figures were present both participating in discussions and interviewing key players.

The forum welcomes leaders from all sectors of society, allowing them to concentrate on the big picture for a couple of days and to learn from each other. The synergies created are as compelling as they are crucial.

One would think that this type of enhanced dialogue would be welcome by all.

However, we live in a time of high political polarization, extremist politics in many countries, massive conspiracy theories abetted by social media and fake news, climate change deniers and anti-globalists. Among the false narratives that they manage are the vision of Davos as being the seat of a world government fulfilling a leftist mandate and trying to destroy capitalism and individual countries by eliminating national governments.

The COVID epidemic and social has provided conspiracy theorists with a basis from which to criticize the WEF and excoriate the concept of a “global government”. The “great reset”, as the recovery from the pandemic is called, is an opportunity for leaders of all sectors of society to focus on creating an economy that respects the environment and mitigates global warming.

Anyone who lives (like we do) in a city like Merida Mexico understands the reality of climate change. Last week the temperature with the heat impact factored in reached 55º C! Not a laughing matter as many parts of the globe are undergoing these increasingly extreme weather patterns and suffering the consequences.

Critics claim that the fact that world leaders such as Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte use similar language to underscore the importance of the moment demonstrates that they are somehow being “indoctrinated” by a higher power – the WEF.

According to Sky News Host Rowan Dean, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte are “golden pin-up boys” for Klaus Schwab and the globalist fantasists of the World Economic Forum. “The similarities between Canada and Holland are as startling as they are disturbing,” Mr Dean has said.

It would seem to make sense to anyone who analyzes the global environmental situation that this “great reset” make sense if we are to survive as a species. The “Great Reset”   is the name of an initiative launched by the WEF in June 2020. It calls for “fairer outcomes” and a rethinking of global investment and government expenditure in order to revive the world’s economy in light of the economic effects of the pandemic. The greening of the economy has been seen as the only way to ensure economic growth and mitigate climate change.

And yet, political leaders such as Canada’s Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre have sworn that no minister from his government will ever attend the WEF! No Canadian minister under his watch would take advantage of an opportunity to dialogue with global leaders and experts, preferring to hide behind a smokescreen of ignorance.

Social media platforms have helped perpetuate a major conspiracy theory that promises to lead to no good. To combat this at this critical moment in human history, leaders from all walks of life must cooperate and share information.

The WEF is the one global institution that provides a forum for such exchanges and allows leaders to achieve a coordinated approach to managing the challenges we face.

It would be a shame to lose it.
